Over here at the Herräng Dance Camp headquarters we’re just finalizing the guest list, and boy are we proud to welcome a whole bunch of special guests to camp this summer.
Honorary Guests
These incredible lindy hoppers should need no introduction - but we’ll tell you this anyway: They experienced the swing dance era in first person, and they're absolute legends!
Some of them are original Savoy Ballroom dancers (wow-wow). One learned dancing from Fayard Nicholas, of the famous Nicholas Brothers (wow). One is a Harvest Moon Ball Champion (wow). One is the daughter of legendary Al Minns (wow). One studied balboa with Maxie Dorf (wow). And most of them performed with the great big bands of the swing era (all caps wow).
Yes, our honorary guests are celebrated for their dedication to preserving and promoting lindy hop’s unique heritage and spirit. But there's more...
There's more guests?
Absolutely! And these people are all amazing dancers and teachers too. But they happen to also be authors, scholars, advocates, artists, and professors (sometimes all of it at once) - passionate about exploring other aspects of swing dancing, past the perhaps obvious.
Luckily for us, some of our guests have made it their living to dive deeper into history, human behavior and social norms, looking at the cultural and political elements of dancing. Some of them are not only jazz royals, but also equally notable in hip hop. Some write, some fight (good fights), some sing. Their work makes this community - actually, the whole darn world - thrive. And they all have stories to tell, and thoughts to provoke.
We can't adequately put into words how excited we are about our guests*, but we're so happy they will come and share their wisdom, humor and ideas with us. All this talk about passionate guardians of African American culture and legendary dancers reminds us of...
* It hits the billions on the official wow scale!
