WHAT IS SWING MUSIC AND WHAT IS SWING DANCE?
Swing music is many different things to many different people, but in general terms it mainly refers to a form of syncopated jazz music with historical roots within the African-American community. The genre gradually became more widespread and distributed all over the world with the big band era starting in the late 1920s and continuing well into the 1950s. Swing dance is technically all kinds of dancing to this traditional music, but it is also an umbrella term that encompasses a great range of different specified dance disciplines, all primarily emanating from the 1920s, 30s and 40s. The origins of swing dance among the African-American community has given rise to many other forms of dancing that still exist today. Among probably several hundreds of different dance forms popularized during the heydays, a reasonable amount of them have survived into our time, and among those are the Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, Boogie Woogie, Balboa, Slow Drag, Charleston, Shag, Solo Jazz, Tap and many more.

WHAT IS HERRÄNG DANCE CAMP?
Herräng Dance Camp is a spectacular and world-renowned festival for swing dancers and takes place in the small seaside village of Herräng in Sweden. The event divides into three camp weeks, where some dancers stay for one week, some stay for two, and some stay for the entire period. It is also possible to come and visit for single evenings and take part in the extensive evening and night programmes. Dancers travel from all corners of the world to take classes, social dance and experience the full concept of primarily African-American vernacular swing dancing.

Classes are held at all levels, and the entire event is rooted in a social context covering more or less 24 hours a day, holding all kind of swing dance parties as well as illustrious theme parties on top of debates, interviews, lectures, film presentations and all that jazz from dawn to dusk and from dusk to dawn.
