At Herräng Dance Camp, you’ll find a wide range of courses, levels and detailed course descriptions to help you choose the place that fits you best. Please take a moment to read everything thoroughly. Dancing is not a quick ladder to climb. It takes time, practice and patience to grow. Evaluating your own dancing honestly is one of the most important steps in that process.

We kindly ask you not to choose a higher level just to challenge yourself. Lindy Hop is a partnered dance and selecting a level above your actual ability can create a negative experience not only for you, but also for your partners. The same goes for choosing a level only because friends happen to be in it. Everyone’s dance journey is unique.

Keep in mind that “Intermediate” or any other level can mean different things in different countries or local scenes. That’s why our level descriptions exist. They are written to help you find your true match here at Herräng.

Read now the level descriptions carefully and look only to your own ability and dancing when you choose. Use a bit of self-criticism and self-reflection.

This track immerses students in the rich and powerful culture, movement and intensity of Stepping, a highly energetic African-American form of body percussion. Steppers utilize their body as an instrument to create intricate rhythms and sounds with one’s’ hands, feet and voice. They are both musicians and dancers who perform and move with great strength and intensity that challenges the mind, body and spirit. Strong emphasis will be placed on stepping technique, movement execution as a group and the cultural expression of stepping. Overall, the track will emphasize moving and creating music together, and the importance of the emergence of stepping within African American history and culture.
This level is for dancers who already know 6-count and 8-count rhythms and can dance the foundational figures: Swing-Out, Lindy Circle, and basic Charleston. You should have solid triple steps, take regular classes at home, and combine them with social dancing. In this course, you will start to explore rhythm variations and transitions, and develop musicality by learning how to adapt your dancing to different tempos and styles. With the basic rhythms in place, you will also begin to focus more on leading and following and learn new patterns. If you are a complete beginner, please do not sign up for this level. Choose one of the Beginner Weekends instead.

This level is for dancers who can comfortably switch between 6-count and 8-count rhythms and can lead or follow rhythm changes with ease. Your basics are solid: swing-outs, circles, Frankie Sixes, Charleston, and fundamental variations. You also feel increasingly confident with solo jazz and know routines like the Shim Sham well. You’re ready for faster tempos, challenged, but not intimidated. You’ve begun exploring self-expression and improvisation, and you’re looking to deepen these skills. This is a level you can stay in for many years. You have taken classes for a few years and you social dance every week.

Please read the Intermediate description first. If you already meet those requirements, this level may be right for you. At this stage, Lindy Hop is more than a hobby, you live and breathe dancing and music. You have a clear sense of your own expression and a strong repertoire of solo jazz steps that you can use both solo and in partnered dancing. Tap has crossed your mind, and movements like a shuffle ball change feel natural. Faster tempos are exciting rather than intimidating. You are an active social dancer and continue to take classes or practice on your own. You are motivated to push your skills and deepen your understanding of the dance as an art form. Entry to this level is determined by an audition. Auditions take place on Sundays at 11:20 in the Alhambra tent, where teachers will assess technique, skill, and readiness. Only dancers who pass the audition will join the Intermediate–Advanced group. You may be placed in Intermediate, Intermediate–Advanced, or Advanced to maintain a balanced learning environment. Participation in the audition is mandatory.

Choosing your course and level

Auditions & Class splits

Auditions: Participants at the full-time one-week "IntermediateAdvanced" and "Advanced" level of Lindy Hop and Balboa are required to participate in an audition. The auditions help ensure that participants in higher-level classes have the necessary skills, technique, and foundational understanding to fully engage with advanced material. By creating groups of dancers with similar abilities, we can foster a more focused and effective learning environment, benefiting both dancers and instructors alike.

  • Auditions for Balboa will take place Saturdays at 19:00 in the Alhambra tent.
  • Auditions for Lindy Hop will take place Sundays at 11:20 in the Alhambra tent.

Teachers will evaluate dancers on skill, technique, and readiness. Only those invited by instructors will join the Advanced group, while others will be placed into Intermediate-Advanced groups, ensuring a balanced learning environment. Participation in auditions is mandatory for eligibility in the Advanced group. If you’re unable to attend the audition, access to the advanced level won’t be possible.

Class split: If too many participants sign up in one of our levels, they will be divided into several groups. The division will be done randomly, hence, this will not be an audition and there will be no level difference between the groups. Of course, we will try to keep groups of friends in the same class as much as possible. Do not fret, we will inform you well in advance, in case we need you to be present at a class split.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I supposed to only follow my group’s schedule, or can I choose a little bit whatever I like?

You are supposed to only follow the schedule of the program you signed up for. Be aware that we frequently perform passport controls during classes.

Can I book the single class/classes in advance?

We don’t make reservations for single classes beforehand. The priority goes to the people registering for the whole week as Herrang Dance Camp is based on the weekly basis programme. Whenever there are spots left , we can sell them to those who are joining just for a couple of days. So please come to our Reception on your arrival and ask about the options available.

Is it possible to change programs/levels once the week has started?

These kinds of changes are not very usual and they are exceptions to the rule almost every time. Please also note that Sunday evenings are the only time when it will be possible to change programmes. All programmes will be level checked on Sundays, and accordingly all level changes will be possible only with the approval of our Reception staff and teachers.

Is it possible to take private lessons from the teachers in Herräng?

This is something the camp administration is not involved in. Instead, if you are interested in taking a private lesson, please speak directly to the teacher in question. It’s up to him or her to say yes or no, and it’s up to the both of you to agree on compensation. If you need access to a dance floor, please feel free to make use of any hours that are not booked for anything else. At the same time, please note that it is never possible to look upon such a free dance floor as a private area – other interested dancers must also be given access.

Is there always an absolute balance between followers and leaders in the different programmes?

No, some of them might come with an imbalance, although we try our best to even all the classes out. But even then we can’t control if everybody is actually showing up to their classes everyday. So please do not expect things to be completely 50-50 – the nature of the camp itself seems to avoid the mathematical harmony of absolute balance.

Should I bring my Herräng passport with me at all times?

Yes, please do and please look upon it as a valuable document. The card is your entrance ticket to classes, parties as well as many other activities.

Different types of dances explained

Lindy Hop

The Lindy Hop is mainly a partner dance, centred around self-expression, syncopation, and improvisation. Listening to your partner is key! It can be danced to all kinds of tempos and it even takes to the air occasionally. Amidst the economic struggles brought about by the Great Depression and systemic racism, this dance originated as a cheerful response to the 1920s scene and was predominantly embraced by Black dancers. Many of them lived in Harlem, where hip dance spots like the Savoy and the Alhambra ballrooms were the place to be – that is where our tents get their names. The dance came together from different social dances that happened before it, like the Cakewalk, the Breakaway, and partnered Charleston. The Hellzapoppin' clip is as inspiring as it gets for Lindy Hop!

Balboa

It is difficult to pinpoint the exact time this dance saw light for the first time, but we can estimate it happened around the time when jazz arrived to the shores of the seaside town of Balboa in Southern California. The ballroom restrictions on open dancing in the 1930s which limited the Charleston and other exuberant dances probably led to the chest-to-chest partner dance we nowadays call Pure Balboa. Simultaneously, some daring dances introduced turns, kicks and even air steps – we now know this style as Bal-Swing. The passing of the years has given us what we today call Balboa. You’ll be able to enjoy some good dancing on the “Start Cheering” and Venice Beach clips.

Solo Jazz

Solo Jazz is an umbrella term that gathers many dances from the pre-Cakewalk dances to the post-war era styles, as well as be-bop and rhythm & blues. In modern terminology it often refers to dancing without a partner, and it comes without any influences of ballet or any other modern contemporary techniques. It is a very characteristic dance due to its syncopated steps and rhythms, and call and response to the music, all the while incorporating the vocabulary and steps of the vernacular jazz tradition. Solo jazz can be danced freely and improvised or in routines such as Shim Sham Shimmy, Big Apple, Trickeration, or Tranky Doo. Definitely look these names up and get some inspiration: Bessie Dudley, Florence Hill, Leon James, Mabel Lee, Norma Miller, Al Minns.

Tap

The combination of West African rhythms and British Isles soft-shoe and hard-shoe step dances gave shape and form to what we now know as tap dance. There are two considerable variations: Rhythm tap which focuses on musicality and is considered part of the jazz tradition, and Broadway tap, which centres around the dance and is widely performed in musical theatre. Worth mentioning some tap legends such as John Bubbles, the Nicholas Brothers, Bill Bojangles Robinson and Jeni LeGon.
