Herräng Dance Camp

2nd July to 6th August

Prepmode for Camp 2016
Welcome to Herräng

Swing Kids and Swing Teens

Swing Kids (9-12 years) and Swing Teens (13-15 years) – 2016
Welcome to this year's edition of Swing Kids and Swing Teens summer camp in Sweden! The event is primarily for all of you interested in rhythmical swing era dances such as Lindy Hop, Boogie Woogie, Charleston and Solo Jazz. The camp has been established for many years and is run by Hanna and Mattias Lundmark together with a long line of guest teachers. Please feel heartily welcome to an unforgettable and exciting camp filled with inspiring teachers, new friends and lots of dance joy.

Summer theme for 2016: JAZZ ATTACKS!
This year's theme is decided: Jazz Attacks! This theme will cover all aspects of the weeks, and will give us the opportunity to look into the root system of vernacular African-American music and dance: the jazz music itself! This kind of music can be traced back to the late 1800s with ragtime and pre-jazz, followed by New Orleans jazz, dixieland, big band swing, rhythm and blues, be-bop and many more. We will look into all these styles of music and the different dances that came with them, and then integrate it all with the different time eras where they developed.

Inside the Frame of Jazz Attacks!, we will open up for each and everyone to try to play an instrument. For those of you already experienced holding an instrument, please bring your instrument with you to Herräng. For those of you being unexperienced playing an instrument, we will provide instruments to borrow. Professional musicians will hang around, so please be prepared for some serious jam sessions together with them and the other students. Maybe a new Ella Fitzgerald or Louis Armstrong will be born in Herräng this summer ...

Swing Kids

Swing Kids

Week 1 (2/7-9/7), three tracks
We aim to have three groups: Swing Kids, Swing Teens and one group for more experienced dancers in mixed ages. The last group is a level where students will be handpicked by Hanna and Mattias; the group will furthermore only happen if enough students will sign up. Your Own Choice for the week is Little Big Band, Streetdance or Tap. Please notice that the majority of all classes and information will be held in Swedish.

Week 2 (9/7-16/7), international week with two tracks
This week offers both Swing Kids as well as Swing Teens. We encourage all our international students to register for this week rather than the previous, and also all Swedish kids who want to practise some extra English! The teaching and information in general will balance between Swedish, English and Swinglish. Your Own Choice for the week is Little Big Band or Streetdance.

Latest news:
We are both happy and proud to announce that one of our music teachers for Swing Kids and Swing Teens will be none other than Jens "Jesse" Lindgren from Stockholm. Jens started to play jazz music in teenage school bands in the early 1960s, continued in different jazz orchestras to finally become an internationally recognized trombonist with a distinct connection to the New Orleans tradition. Throughout the years, Jens has been a member of the Swedish Jazz Academy and also produced several hundreds of programs for the Swedish Radio. Jens is today the musical leader of recognized big band Kustbandet, teacher in jazz history at The Royal College of Music and a globetrotter musician par preference. In Herräng his guidance and teaching will include both the musical aspect as well as the historical.
