Shag is a term widely used for different forms of swing dancing originating in the U.S. in the 1930s. The St. Louis Shag, emanating in St. Louis, Missouri, is a descendant of the Charleston and features an eight count basic, kick aways, cross steps, and many variations. The dance style came about during the swing era and remained a popular social dance in St. Louis through the 1960s.
