Shag is a term widely used for various styles of swing dancing originating in the 1930s. Often, Shag refers specifically to Collegiate Shag, a spot dance whose basic is usually a six count pattern that begins in a closed position or close embrace. In its original form, eight count basics were used and the dance could resemble Balboa. This style of Shag is known to have been practiced across the United States, including in the Carolinas, Chicago, and Southern California. The style of Shag that will be presented in this course in Herräng is the Collegiate Shag.
